Project Goals
A need was identified through data for an intensive targeted intervention for AVID students. It is a goal that 75% of AVID students pass all of their core classes. After semester 1 2013, the data showed the following results: In grade 9- 77.1% of students passed core classes with a C or better In grade 10- 52.76% of students passed core classes with a C or better In grade 11- 60.7% of students passed core classes with a C or better In grade 12- 83.73% of students passed core classes with a C or better Students need to be successful in their core classes in order to 1) get into a 4- year university and 2) to be successful in college and beyond. It was determined that an additional intervention was needed to support students in their core classes. Intervention within the school day is accomplished through tutorials and other AVID elective intervention methods. It was determined that a Saturday School Intervention would be a great opportunity to give students targeted intervention. Note: Perhaps there is a drop in passing rates in grades 10 and 11 due to the increased rigor in their core academic classes and the addition of AP courses. Typically we find that students are more successful by the time their Senior year comes around due to the fact that they are more focused and prepared for rigorous coursework at this point. Students tend to struggle mostly in rigorous science and math courses. Re-teaching through tutoring is necessary for student mastery. (Typically in Chemistry, AP Biology, Physics, Algebra 2, Precalculus, and AP Calculus). |
